freedom

“those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves”
-Abraham Lincoln

In working with such an oft-maligned breed such as the affable Pit Bull terrier, I’m reminded of our tendency to deny others the simple rights that we take for granted. Massachusetts has taken many steps to grant simple rights to its GLBTQ citizens, but there is still so much work to be done.

There is no sanctity in the idea of marriage when those who abuse it deny it to those who would honor it. There is no tenet of “do no harm” in a healthcare system that denies essential care to those who cannot afford it. There is no patriotism in a populace that refuses to honor its civic duty to benefit its fellow citizens.

Some of our government’s antics are so insidious as to be laughable. And we have grown numb from the constant barrage of callous behavior, which is ominous. I long to live in a country where everyone who accepts the responsibility of being a citizen understands that we are all in this together, independent of our myriad, unique, selves.
